Wendy Orozco Rodríguez
Visiting Graduate Student

She is a visiting graduate student at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Natural Resources and Environment at Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CIIDIR Sinaloa Unit), Mexico. Her research centers on the characterization of marine heatwaves and their influence on biological processes in the Gulf of California. During her research stay, she is analyzing the impact of marine heatwaves and their potential physical drivers on the variability of fisheries-related datasets in the region. Additionally, this internship provides an opportunity to explore datasets from Newfoundland and Labrador to assess the role of marine heatwaves and cold spells in shaping salmon aquaculture dynamics.

Paola Echeverría Garcés
NF-POGO CofE Scholar

Paola is a scholar from the 2025-2026 Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence (NF-POGO CofE). She holds a M.Sc. in Oceanography with a specialization in Open Ocean Processes from Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, supported by a scholarship from the Carolina Foundation. She earned her bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering from Escuela Politecnica Nacional. Her experience includes ocean-atmosphere interaction, hydrometeorology, medium and long-term climatological forecasting, data analysis and fieldwork. As a POGO Scholar, Paola is working with high-resolution temperature and salinity glider observations in Atlantic Canada to develop a gridded product that will be integrated into CASTS.

Gabriel Santiago Gutierrez Cardenas
NF-POGO CofE Scholar

Gabriel Santiago Gutiérrez-Cárdenas has been a NF-POGO Centre of Excelence in Observational Oceanography’s scholar since October 2025, having earned a Master on Science at CICIMAR-IPN, México, receiving the best postgraduate thesis of 2024 award by their research in the diversity of El Niño-Southern Oscillation and their impacts on upwelling centers in the southern region of the California Current. Additionally, he earned a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from the Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano (UJTL) (2017-2022). During 2025, he conducted two courses, the first from Data Analysis and Data Visualization, and the second from Basics Statistics at bachelor’s level in the UJTL as well as research and co-supervision of research thesis. He has published research papers focusing on the analysis of climate teleconnections and how ENSO affects hydroclimatology and coastal systems in different regions of the world. He has participated in national and international scientific events as a speaker and is interested in understanding how teleconnections, ocean-atmosphere processes, marine heat waves, and upwelling processes interact with each other and affect the biological and ecological characteristics of oceanic and coastal ecosystems. Hi current project is on Marine Heat Waves on the Newfoundland and Labrador shelf.

Md Rashed-Ul-Alam
NF-POGO CofE Scholar

Rashed is a scholar from the 2025-2026 Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence (NF-POGO CofE). He finished his Bachelors and Masters in Oceanography from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh. He has a strong interest in interdisciplinary research in areas of physical oceanography, marine and coastal ecology, fisheries acoustics, and climate change. His project is on Linking physical oceanography and fisheries acoustics from AZFP sensorsat a long-term monitoring station.

Tom Spencer-Hicken
NF-POGO CofE Scholar

Tom is a scholar from the 2025-2026 Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence (NF-POGO CofE). Tom's project will be on the propagation of Kelvin waves and their impact on coastal upwellings and hydrographic responses in Newfoundland bays. His research will also involve investigating mass die-off events with corresponding patterns of internal kelvin wave events and sharp decreases in water temperature. This will involve validating model data using station moorings along the Newfoundland coast.

Mireia Gonzalez Mingote
PhD Student

Mireia is a PhD student at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) in Barcelona, Spain. She holds a degree in Marine Sciences from the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain, and a Master's degree in Sustainable Management of Fisheries Resources from the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Her research focuses on understanding the influence of environmental variability on fishery resources in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea and their interaction with oceanographic processes. She also works as a technician specialized in spatial data analysis and fishing effort estimation. In addition to her PhD research, she is currently working with geolocated data from small-scale fisheries to infer fishing maneuvers and estimate fishing effort for complex passive gears such as gillnets and trammel nets.

Frédéric Cyr
Principal Investigator and Mentor

As a physical oceanographer, I have always been committed to develop an overall understanding of the physical-biogeochemical interactions and ecosystem functionning in the NW Atlantic and elsewhere in the world. I am especially interested in Ocean Climate and Fisheries Environment. OceanAccess is my vision for a lab focusing on academic research and education. The name OceanAccess has a double meaning and refers to both accessing the mysteries of the ocean (scientific discoveries), but also making ocean observations accessible to others (open access philosophy). More information about my work can be found by visiting my academic webpages.

MD. Shahadat Hossain
NF-POGO CofE Scholar (2024-25)

I'm an early career oceanographer with a particular interest in interdisciplinary research approaches. I've completed a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in oceanography at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet, Bangladesh. My research focuses on improving our understanding of regional-scale oceanographic processes, bio-physical interaction, and climate change through an interdisciplinary lens. His project was on the freshwater transport in the Labrador Coastal Current.
