About OceanAccess

Officially created in 2025, OceanAccess a is multi-disciplinary oceanographic research lab led by Dr. Frédéric Cyr at the Centre for Fisheries and Ecosystem Research, Fisheries and Marine Insitute of Memorial University in St. John's, NL, Canada.

At OceanAccess, we do oceanograhic research using ocean observations. This means that we go on the ocean to collect data using different means, from small craft boats to large oceanographic vessels, but also from sea ice or using autonomous vehicles (e.g., underwater gliders). When we are not on the ocean, we also observe the ocean from space using satellite, or we use numerical models to interpret the observations made.

OceanAccess' research focuses on the role that the ocean has in the Earth's climate system, from the smallest scales of turbulence to the slow drivers of ocean variability occurring at decadal time scales. For example, how the ocean mediates the Earth's carbon budget, how it contributes to heat and freshwater redistribution around the globe, and how it affects regional climates, ecosystems and fisheries.

The name OceanAccess refers to both accessing the ocean in terms of improving our understanding of the ocean and its role for the planet, its climate and its ecosystems, but also in terms of making ocean knowledge accessible via interdisciplinary collaborations and open access research.
